This heat of the sun is not trivial: Know from the doctor when heat stroke becomes a fatal condition, do not make these mistakes at all – ..

The summer season brings with it a long list of seasonal diseases. In this season, some people suffer from skin allergies, while some people’s digestive system gets disturbed. But the problem that is seen the most in all these and which people often take very lightly, is that ‘Heatstroke’ means heatstroke.

Most people think that sunstroke is just a normal lethargy or fatigue caused by sunlight, which can be cured by drinking glucose water. But according to health experts, this notion is extremely dangerous. Heatstroke can actually lead to a serious and in many cases life-threatening illness. If proper care is not received on time, it can even take a person’s life.

Especially small children, the elderly, heart patients and pregnant women are most at risk. Apart from this, people who do field work in sunlight are also its direct targets.

What happens when the body’s cooling system fails?

Director & Unit Head (Unit-1, Cardiology) at Aakash Healthcare Dr. Sanjay Kumar Chugh According to, there is a natural system within our body to keep the temperature balanced, which works like this in extreme heat:

science of temperature

The normal temperature of our body is around 37°C. When the heat increases outside, our body keeps itself cool from inside through sweat. But, when the temperature outside rises too high and hot winds blow, this natural cooling system of the body gradually stops working. In such a situation, if the internal temperature of the body increases to 40°C (104°F) or above and does not decrease, then the person becomes a victim of heatstroke.

When does heat stroke become a medical emergency?

Dr. Sanjay Kumar Chugh further explains that heat stroke proves to be most fatal when a person’s high fever cannot be reduced by any medicine or remedy. When the patient’s skin becomes completely hot and dry (without sweat), he starts feeling dizzy or he starts fainting, then these are very serious signs.

In such a situation, what changes occur within the body can be easily understood from the table given below:

How to protect yourself from the deadly attack of heat wave? (Prevention Tips)

If you go out in the sun daily or your work is in the field, then by including these important habits in your daily routine, you can remain completely safe from heatstroke:

  • Drink plenty of water: To maintain the water level in the body, drink at least 3 to 4 liters of water throughout the day. Even if you don’t feel thirsty, keep drinking water at frequent intervals.

  • Take help of traditional drinks: Instead of drinking only plain water, include lemon water, fresh buttermilk, salty lassi and coconut water in your diet. These things give instant coolness to the body.

  • Use of electrolytes: If you have to stay in the sun for a long time, drink ORS or drinks containing electrolytes. Due to this, there is no deficiency of essential minerals in the body which come out through sweat.

  • Stay away from caffeine: Avoid drinking too much tea, coffee or carbonated soft drinks during hot summer days. Instead of hydrating the body, the caffeine present in them absorbs the internal water rapidly (increases dehydration).

  • Avoid going out during peak hours: Between 12 noon and 4 pm the sun’s rays are at their strongest and hot winds (loo) blow. Try not to leave home or office during this period.

Pay special attention to these things while going out

  1. Choice of clothes: Whenever it is necessary to go out, always wear light-coloured, loose-fitting and cotton clothes. Synthetic clothes trap heat inside the body.

  2. Safety armor: Cover your head and face with a cap, cotton towel or umbrella. To protect your eyes from the heat of the sun, wear good quality sunglasses.

  3. Water Rich Fruits: Make special fruits available in the summer season like watermelon, cantaloupe, cucumber and orange a part of your diet. They contain a lot of water, which keeps the body fresh from inside.

  4. Adequate Rest: Avoid excessive physical fatigue and give complete rest to the body so that your metabolism and internal temperature remain under control.

An important advice: Heat stroke may seem like a common seasonal problem, but if carelessness is taken, it can directly cause organ failure. If you or someone around you notices initial symptoms like very high fever, red and dry skin, nausea or dizziness, then instead of relying on home remedies, immediately contact the nearest doctor.
