A 45-year-old Chilean man on June 5 was charged for stealing a pair of luxury Versace sunglasses costing S$389.91 (US$290) from a retail outlet in the transit area of Changi Airport Terminal 2.

According to a police statement, a shop assistant discovered the eyewear missing from a display shelf and reviewed CCTV footage, which allegedly showed the man taking the item on May 27, Asia One reported.

After identifying the suspect, the employee followed him through the terminal.

Police said the man discarded the sunglasses after realizing he was being tailed.

Officers from the airport subsequently arrested the suspect before his departing flight and recovered the stolen item, Must Share News reported.

If convicted of theft in dwelling, he could face a jail term of up to seven years, a fine, or both.

Police warned that offenders should not assume they can evade detection, adding that authorities will continue to take firm action against theft-related offenses at the airport.

Some foreign tourists have recently been caught for stealing luxury items inside Changi Airport.
