Hollywood has finally found its first billion-dollar blockbuster of 2026

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie has officially crossed the $1 billion mark at the global box office, cementing its place as the biggest cinematic success of the year so far.
Released in April, the animated adventure has continued to dominate cinemas well into its tenth weekend, demonstrating the kind of staying power few modern releases manage to achieve. Rather than fading after a strong opening, the film has maintained impressive momentum across international markets, attracting audiences of all ages.
The film earned an impressive $428.5 million in North America and a further $571.5 million from overseas territories, pushing its worldwide total beyond the coveted billion-dollar milestone. The achievement makes it the first Hollywood film of 2026 to reach the mark and further strengthens the global appeal of Nintendo’s beloved franchise.
Within the Mario cinematic universe, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie currently trails only The Super Mario Bros. Moviewhich set a new benchmark for video game adaptations in 2023. However, with the film still performing strongly at the box office, its final total remains an open question.
The latest success has also propelled the Mario film franchise past $2.3 billion worldwide from just two movies. The figure is particularly remarkable when compared with some of animation’s biggest brands, many of which required significantly more instalments to achieve similar numbers.
The milestone further highlights the growing dominance of video game adaptations in Hollywood. Once considered a risky genre, gaming franchises are now producing some of the industry’s most reliable box-office performers, with Mario leading the charge.
