SBI ATM Cash Crisis 2026: Why are ATMs becoming empty? Know CATMi’s warning and full reason
Business Desk – SBI ATM Cash Crisis 2026: Complaints of cash shortage in State Bank of India (SBI) ATMs are increasing in many parts of the country, especially in small towns and rural areas. At many places people are reaching the ATM, but either cash is not available in the machine or due to technical reasons they are not able to withdraw the money. Although, such problems have been encountered earlier also, but this time there has been increased concern in the banking sector regarding the ATM cash crisis.
What is CATMi and why did it warn?
Confederation of ATM Industry (CATMi) is a non-profit trade organization of India’s ATM industry. It represents the ATM sector and works to coordinate between the government, banks and industry. This Mumbai-based organization also focuses on research and development work related to the ATM industry.
CATMi has warned banks and the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) that if the existing problems are not resolved soon, it may impact the entire ATM industry and many ATM services may be affected.
Increasing problems in rural areas
CATMi claims that the problem of cash in ATMs is continuously increasing in small towns and rural areas. The organization says that many ATMs are nearing the point of closure. He has also alleged that State Bank of India is delivering cash to ATMs in big cities on priority basis, while cash supply is being cut in small towns and villages.
The organization says that ATM operators are suffering financial loss due to this. For this reason, CATMi has demanded a compensation of Rs 100 crore from the banking industry and has appealed to find a solution to this problem by June 20.
What is the reason behind shortage of cash in ATM?
According to experts, there are many reasons behind the problem of cash in ATMs. The biggest reason among these is considered to be the rapidly increasing use of digital payments and UPI. After the increase in UPI and online transactions, people have reduced their withdrawal of cash from ATMs.
Along with this, the cost of operating ATM is continuously increasing. To deliver cash, more has to be spent on fuel expenses, transportation, security guards, salaries of employees and maintenance of machines. On the other hand, the decrease in cash withdrawals is affecting the income of operators.
Big decline in cash withdrawals
According to statistics, in the year 2023, about 57 crore cash withdrawal transactions took place every month from ATMs. This number will reduce to approximately 43.95 crore by 2025. The increasing trend of digital payments has reduced people’s dependence on cash and now most of the payments are being made online.
What did SBI say?
State Bank of India says that this situation is not permanent. According to the bank, there is no shortage of cash in the country. The problem is limited to only a few ATMs, where customers are facing problems due to non-availability of cash on time. The bank claims that the cash supply system is being improved and the situation will soon become normal.
What is the whole picture?
At present, the reason for ATM cash crisis is not only lack of cash, but changing banking habits, increasing use of digital payments, increasing operating costs and challenges of cash distribution. CATMi has termed this issue as serious and has demanded an early solution, while SBI says that customers do not need to worry much and the problem is temporary.
