Zee5 crashes during FIFA World Cup 2026 opener: Indian fans furious as stream fails on matchday one
Zee5 fails at the worst possible moment
Zee5, the official streaming platform for the FIFA World Cup 2026 in India, crashed or became inaccessible for a large number of subscribers just as the tournament’s opening match between Mexico and South Africa kicked off at the Estadio Azteca on Friday morning IST. Within minutes of the match getting underway, X (formerly Twitter) was flooded with complaints from Indian fans who had paid for Zee5 subscriptions specifically to watch the World Cup — and found themselves staring at a broken stream.
What fans are reporting
The complaints flooding X paint a consistent picture of a platform that was not prepared for the traffic surge that a FIFA World Cup opening match was always going to bring.
Users reported multiple issues simultaneously:
The most common complaint was an outright crash. One user, @freezy3767, wrote on X: “Zee5 crashed… paisa wapas kar,” reflecting the widespread anger over paid subscriptions delivering nothing at kickoff.
Stream quality was another flashpoint. Despite Zee5 marketing its World Cup coverage as high-definition, multiple users reported the stream being capped at 720p. User @Sarvesh83152394 asked: “Does Zee5 really only support 720p and call it HD?” while @YoungForever720 wrote that the platform had promised “everything” but delivered “no 1080p, capped at 720p, no proper UI.”
Several users also flagged that there is no Zee5 app available on laptops, leaving a significant portion of subscribers with no way to watch even if the mobile stream was functional.
One user pointed out that the FIFA World Cup was previously available free on JioCinema — making the paid Zee5 requirement feel like a step backwards for Indian fans. @RRRamCharanfan wrote: “Zee5 upgrade scam in name of World Cup even for subscribed users. Last time it was free on JioTV and JioCinema.”
Anger over pricing and accessibility
Beyond the technical failures, fans expressed frustration over Zee5’s subscription pricing for World Cup access. One user questioned whether a subscription of Rs 1,000 was required just to watch the FIFA opener, while others complained that existing Zee5 subscribers — including those on the Xstream bundle — still could not access the World Cup stream.
@anbusampath flagged: “Why is FIFA WC 2026 not part of Vi Movies and TV Zee5 OTT service?” — suggesting that even users on bundled plans were locked out.
Autoscaling failure
One of the more technically specific complaints came from @piyushj4in, who wrote that “Zee5 forgot to enable autoscaling” — a reference to cloud infrastructure that automatically expands server capacity during traffic spikes. If accurate, it would suggest the platform’s backend was simply not configured to handle the simultaneous load of millions of Indian fans logging in for a World Cup match.
What Zee5 has said
At the time of writing, Zee5 had not issued a public statement addressing the outage or the stream quality complaints. Business Upturn has reached out to Zee5 for comment and will update this article when a response is received.
A damaging start
The FIFA World Cup 2026 runs for 39 days and features 104 matches. If Zee5 cannot stabilise its platform for the very first game, the next two months could be extremely difficult for the broadcaster — and for Indian football fans who have no alternative official streaming option.
For now, the hashtag #FifaOpenerOnZEE5 is trending on X, and the sentiment is almost entirely negative.
