Why is Ketaki flower not offered?
According to the legend, once there was a dispute between Lord Brahma and Lord Vishnu regarding superiority. Then Lord Shiva appeared in the form of Anant Jyotirlinga and asked both the gods to find its beginning and end. It is said that Brahmaji prepared the Ketaki flower to give false testimony and falsely told Lord Shiva that he had found the end of Jyotirlinga. Lord Shiva became angry with this untruth and cursed the Ketaki flower that it would never find a place in his worship. Since then, Ketaki flower is not offered on Shivalinga.
Why is Tulsi Dal prohibited in Shiva Puja?
According to religious beliefs, Asura Jalandhar was a great devotee of Lord Shiva. He was killed by Lord Shiva himself. Jalandhar’s wife was Devi Tulsi, who was deeply saddened by her husband’s death. It is believed that for this reason Tulsi prohibited the use of its leaves in the worship of Lord Shiva. This is the reason why while the worship of Lord Vishnu is considered incomplete without Tulsi Dal, Tulsi is not offered in Shiv Puja.
Why is turmeric not offered on Shivalinga?
In Hindu tradition, turmeric is considered a symbol of good luck and femininity. Shivlinga is considered a symbol of the male element. For this reason, it is prohibited to offer turmeric on Shivalinga. Apart from this, the nature of turmeric is considered hot, whereas Lord Shiva loves cool things. Therefore, cool things like Belpatra, Ganga water, sandalwood, hemp and raw milk are offered in his worship.
Why was it considered prohibited to offer water to Shivalinga with a conch?
According to Shivpuran, there was a powerful demon named Shankhachud, who was killed by Lord Shiva. According to the story, the conch shell originated from the ashes of his body. For this reason, it is not considered appropriate to offer water from the conch to Shivlinga. Especially on the occasion of Mahashivratri, it is advisable to avoid doing Abhishekam with conch shell.
Why Abhishekam is not done with coconut water?
There is a religious belief that coconut is considered a symbol of Goddess Lakshmi and it is also called Quince. It has special significance in the worship of Lord Vishnu. Although coconut can be offered on Shivalinga, but anointing with its water is not considered appropriate. It is believed that coconut water is not used in Shiva worship because it is associated with Goddess Lakshmi.
