New Delhi:There is such a historical place in the Punjab province of neighboring country Pakistan, which is famous all over the world not only for its amazing architecture but also for its deep religious and mythological mysteries. ‘Katasraj Temple’ located in Chatwal district is an ancient Shiva temple, to which a very miraculous pond is attached. This place has special significance in the Sanatan tradition, and it is believed that the water of this holy pond never dries up. Despite tight security arrangements and various administrative restrictions, every year on the holy occasion of Mahashivratri, devotees from all over the world including India come here to worship Mahadev.

‘Sarcasm’ arising from separation of Sati

There is a very sentimental mythological story behind the construction of this ancient temple and pond. According to beliefs, when Goddess Sati committed suicide by jumping into the Yagya Kund of her father Daksh, Lord Shiva went into deep grief due to her separation. Two drops of tears from Mahadev’s eyes fell on the earth. One of these drops fell in the holy Pushkar located in Ajmer, Rajasthan and the other drop fell in this part of Pakistan, due to which ‘Katas Kund’ was born. The place got its name ‘Kataas’ from the Sanskrit word ‘Kataksa’, which literally means ‘eyes full of tears’. Devotees believe that bathing in this pond purifies the mind and soul of a person.

Deep connection with Mahabharata period

Katasraj is not limited only to Shiva stories but it also has historical connection with the Mahabharata period. It is said that Pandavas spent a long time here during their exile. This is the same place where Dharmaraja Yudhishthir got the lives of his four brothers back by giving correct answers to the Yaksha’s complex questions.

mystery of the temple

According to historians, this temple complex is more than 1000 years old. In ancient times, this place was a big center of knowledge, philosophy and meditation. Staying in the Nandana Fort located near this area, the great 11th century Muslim scholar Alberuni had discovered the exact formula to measure the circumference of the Earth without any modern technology, which surprises even today’s modern scientists.
