Supreme Court’s Significant Verdict: Call housewives nation builders and not homemakers, Supreme Court commented, praising the contribution of women who handle household chores.

New Delhi. During the hearing of a case, the Supreme Court said that women who handle household chores have an important contribution in nation building because they strengthen the foundation of the family, nurture children and prepare the next generation of the country, hence housewives should be called nation builders and not homemakers. The court said that the services of housewives have economic value, which cannot be ignored. If the value of a woman’s household work is calculated, her estimated income is around Rs 30 thousand per month.

Justices Sanjay Karol and N. The bench of Kotishwar Singh made the above observations while ordering additional compensation to the husband of a woman on her death in a road accident case. The bench said that while determining the compensation for a housewife who gets injured or dies in an accident, her contribution cannot be merely tokenized or underestimated. Recognizing the large, but often unpaid, contributions that housewife women make to society, harms related to household care should be recognized as an additional category for compensation.

Instructions given to Chief Justice of all High Courts

The Supreme Court has also directed the Chief Justices of all High Courts to monitor the progress of Motor Vehicle Act cases. We have issued certain directions from the Bench and we hope and trust that the Chief Justices of all the High Courts will keep an eye on all these matters and the provisions laid down under Section 169 of the Act, that is, it should be a summary procedure, will be followed in full and in true spirit. The top court gave this decision on a petition challenging a 2024 decision of the Punjab and Haryana High Court. This case is related to the death of a woman in a collision between two vehicles in the year 2001.
