‘When India is attacked with European-made weapons’, Jaishankar’s tongue-in-cheek response to Russian oil
India is indirectly helping Russia in Ukraine war by buying oil from Russia. US President Donald Trump has been making this complaint against Delhi for a long time. Foreign Minister S Jaishankar gave a stern reply when asked about this issue in an interview recently. In plain language, European-made weapons have been attacked for years. But India did not take any action that would cause any harm to Europe.
Recently, Foreign Minister Jaishankar participated in a discussion meeting in Finland. He was asked there, why India’s soft attitude about Russia? Even after the start of the war in Ukraine, why are they dependent on Russian oil? In response, Jaishankar raised the issue of Europe’s arms and India’s security violations. He said, “There has never been an attack on any European country with Indian weapons. It would be good if I could say the same about Europe. Attacks have happened in India with European-made weapons. This has been happening for years. I think the matter needs to be thought through.”
Jaishankar said, “India has been attacked with European-made weapons. This has been happening for years. I think the matter needs to be thought through.”
Apart from this, regarding the purchase of Russian oil, Jaishankar said, “India does not buy oil keeping in mind the geopolitical issues of any country. Oil is bought keeping in mind the price and availability. India has bought oil from West Asia in the past. When Europe also started buying oil from here, Russia became an alternative to India. The situation has taken us that way.” At the same time, Jaishankar pointed at America and said, “America asked India to buy Russian oil so that there is no instability in the energy market. But not according to Washington, India buys oil from Russia for its own interests.”
It should be noted that after the start of the Russia-Ukraine war from 2022, several Western countries stopped importing Russian oil. However, many countries such as Germany continue to import Russian gas. Without Russian gas, Germany would be virtually immobilized, it is said. At that time, India started buying Russian oil at a low price. The volume of Russian oil imports started to increase. America did not take this matter well from the beginning. But New Delhi’s position was clear, keeping in mind the national interest, oil would be procured from wherever it is profitable to import oil. From Jaishankar, the central leadership has repeatedly said this on several international platforms. He reminded, before warning India, Western countries themselves should completely boycott Russian products.
