US Becomes #1 Supplier Of LPG, Oil For India

India’s energy relationship with the United States is entering a new phase, with liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and liquefied natural gas (LNG) taking center stage. While discussions around crude oil imports often dominate headlines, recent developments indicate that gas-based fuels may become the strongest pillar of future India-US energy cooperation.

For years, India has relied heavily on countries in the Middle East and Russia to meet its growing energy needs. However, changing geopolitical realities, supply chain disruptions, and the need for greater energy security have encouraged policymakers to diversify sourcing options. In this context, the United States has emerged as an increasingly important supplier of both LPG and LNG.

A significant milestone was achieved when Indian state-owned oil companies signed a structured agreement to import approximately 2.2 million tonnes of LPG from the United States during 2026. The deal is expected to account for nearly 10% of India’s annual LPG imports and marks the first large-scale contractual arrangement for US LPG supplies to the Indian market.

The growing importance of American energy supplies is already visible in trade data. In May 2026, the United States became India’s largest supplier of both LPG and LNG, reflecting New Delhi’s strategy of diversifying imports amid uncertainty in traditional energy corridors. LPG imports from the US witnessed a sharp increase, while supplies from some Middle Eastern countries declined during the same period.

The shift also carries strategic significance. India imports a substantial portion of its LPG and natural gas requirements, making it vulnerable to disruptions in key shipping routes such as the Strait of Hormuz. Recent tensions in West Asia highlighted the risks associated with overdependence on a single region for energy supplies. By expanding imports from the United States, India can reduce these risks while strengthening long-term energy resilience.

Looking ahead, experts believe crude oil will continue to be sourced from multiple countries based on price and availability. However, LPG and LNG are increasingly likely to become the cornerstone of India-US energy trade. As India seeks cleaner fuels and a more diversified energy portfolio, American gas supplies could play a critical role in powering the country’s economic growth while enhancing energy security.
