Police detain Congress leaders during ‘Satyagraha’ over Rajya Sabha nomination cancellation
Delhi Police on Friday set up barricades and detained several Congress leaders and workers who were staging a ‘Satyagraha’ protest at Jantar Mantar against the cancellation of party leader Meenakshi Natarajan’s Rajya Sabha nomination.
The protest was organized by the Congress to challenge the rejection of Natarajan’s nomination papers, a matter that has also reached the Supreme Court. Party leaders alleged that the nomination was cancelled on questionable grounds and accused authorities of undermining democratic processes.
Police deploy security, set up barricades
Security was tightened around Jantar Mantar as Congress leaders and supporters gathered to participate in the demonstration. Police personnel erected barricades in and around the protest site and moved to detain demonstrators as they attempted to continue the agitation. Visuals from the area showed Congress workers raising slogans and holding placards in support of Natarajan. Officials said adequate security arrangements had been made to maintain law and order and prevent any disruption in the area.
Congress raises nomination issue
The protest centred on the rejection of Meenakshi Natarajan’s Rajya Sabha nomination, which the Congress has challenged legally. Party leaders have argued that the dispute relates to disclosures made in Form 26 and have maintained that all required information was provided to the Election Commission. Congress leaders participating in the protest reiterated their demand for a review of the decision and accused authorities of acting unfairly during the scrutiny process. The party has described the issue as a matter concerning democratic rights and electoral transparency.
Supreme Court hearing remains in focus
The nomination dispute is currently under judicial consideration, with the matter being heard by the Supreme Court. Congress leaders have said they are confident that the legal process will bring clarity to the issues surrounding the nomination rejection. The protest at Jantar Mantar was held alongside the party’s legal challenge, highlighting the political significance of the issue for the opposition.
What happens next?
Attention will now remain on the proceedings before the Supreme Court, which is examining the legality of the nomination rejection. Meanwhile, the Congress has indicated that it will continue raising the issue through democratic and constitutional means. Further political reactions and legal developments are expected as the case progresses.
The protest marks the latest escalation in the controversy surrounding Meenakshi Natarajan’s Rajya Sabha nomination, which has become a focal point of political debate in recent days.
