Central government takes possession of Delhi’s Jaipur Polo Ground, action taken after IPA gets a blow from the court, know what is the dispute of 68 acres of land
Central Government Takes Over Jaipur Polo Ground in Delhi: The Central Government has taken over Jaipur Polo Ground in Delhi. Taking major action, the Land and Development Office (L&DO) of the Central Government has sealed the premises. Officials reached the spot and sealed the main entrance and also pasted a notice. The Central Government has taken this action after a Delhi court gave a blow to the Indian Polo Association (IPA). The court has refused to grant interim protection to the Indian Polo Association against the Central Government’s order asking them to vacate the grounds.
This polo ground was gifted by the Maharaja of Jaipur to the Delhi Polo Association. The government claims that its lease had expired in the year 1993. Since then there was illegal occupation of the land. A legal battle was going on regarding the matter, but after not getting relief from the court, the administration has taken control of this land spread over about 68 acres.
On Friday, just a day before the Central Government’s action, the Sessions Court had refused to stay the eviction order. The Indian Polo Association had challenged the eviction order issued under the Public Premises (Eviction of Unauthorized Occupants) Act and sought a stay on its implementation. During the hearing, the court said that similar relief has been demanded in higher courts earlier also. There has been no relief from anywhere. The court said in its order that while following judicial discipline and procedure, it is not in favor of staying the execution of the eviction order.
The next hearing in the case will be held on June 17.
The court directed the Central government to file its reply on the appeal and stay application and listed the matter for hearing before the vacation judge on June 17. The Center told the court that it is proposed to acquire the land occupied by nearby establishments including the Polo Ground and Delhi Gymkhana Club for public purposes. The central government has sought time to file its reply.
Central government presented its stand
While presenting its stand in the matter, the Central Government said in the court that after a 20-year lease in 1951, the lease had ended in 1993. Since then the Indian Polo Association has illegally occupied this ground. Earlier on June 8, the Central Government had assured the Delhi High Court that it would not take any forced eviction action till June 12. The High Court had taken this assurance on record in its order and said that at present there is no immediate plan to implement the eviction order.
