Crude Oil Import By India From Russia: Defying US sanctions, India bought a large amount of crude oil from its old friend Russia in May.
New Delhi. Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar had clearly said recently that wherever India gets cheap crude oil, it will buy it from there. India is also doing this. No matter how many sanctions America is imposing, India defies it and continues to buy crude oil on a large scale from its old ally Russia. In the report of European think tank ‘Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air’ or CREA, it has been said that India has received 83 percent of its total crude oil imports from Russia in May 2026 itself.

According to CREA report, India imported petroleum products worth about 5.8 billion euros from Russia in May. The share of crude oil in this was 4.8 billion euros. Apart from crude oil, India also imported other related products and coal from Russia on a large scale. CREA report states that India increased its crude oil imports by 8 percent in May. Whereas, imports from Russia increased by 21 percent. The report states that Gujarat’s Vadinar Refinery took 36 percent more Russian crude oil in May compared to April. At the same time, Jamnagar Refinery obtained 14 percent more crude oil from Russia.

The CREA report states that New Mangaluru and Visakhapatnam refineries had stopped importing crude oil from Russia in November 2025, but started purchasing crude oil from Russia again from March 2026. According to the report, Paradip Refinery imported so much crude oil from Russia in May, which is the highest in the last two years. Let us tell you that Foreign Minister Jaishankar has clearly said on global platforms that after the start of Ukraine war, the then American government had asked India to buy crude oil from Russia, refine it and supply it across the world. So that the price of petroleum products can be prevented from touching the sky.
