The rules for purchasing this cough syrup have changed, now the medicine will not be available without a doctor’s prescription…

New Delhi:- The Central Government has taken a big decision regarding the sale of cough syrup and other medicinal syrups across the country. Now it will be mandatory to show a valid doctor’s prescription to buy cough syrup from a medical store. The government has banned the sale of these medicines without prescription. Under this change, common people will no longer be able to get cough syrup directly from medical stores like before.
The Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has implemented this new provision by amending the Drugs Rules, 1945. Earlier, under ‘Schedule K’, some medicines and syrups were allowed to be sold without a doctor’s prescription. In the new rules, ‘Syrup’ category has been removed from the list, after which the special exemption given to this category has ended.

Now the slip will have to be shown at the medical store
After the implementation of the new rules, if any person needs cough syrup for cough, cold or other disease, he will have to present a prescription issued by a registered doctor. Pharmacists or chemists will no longer be able to provide syrup without doctor’s advice.

Decision taken regarding safety and quality
This step of the government has been taken with the aim of ensuring the quality of medicines and safety of patients. In the past few years, several cases of death of children due to consumption of contaminated cough syrup were reported. Investigations found the presence of toxic chemicals such as diethylene glycol (DEG) and ethylene glycol (EG) in some products, which posed serious health risks.

Rule implemented after suggestions
The Central Government had earlier issued a draft on this subject and sought suggestions from the common people and concerned parties. After reviewing the suggestions received, the final amendment was approved. The government believes that this decision will prevent misuse of medicines and provide safer treatment to patients.
