Kohima: Nagaland Governor Nand Kishore Yadav chaired a high-level review meeting at Lok Bhawan, Kohima on 15 June 2026. In this meeting, the progress of Dhansiri-Jubja (Dimapur-Kohima) new railway line project and integrated redevelopment work of Dimapur Railway Station was discussed in detail.
Senior officials of Northeast Frontier Railway (Construction) also attended the meeting. The project is being considered historic for the state as it is a major step towards connecting Kohima to the rail network for the first time.
Importance and scope of the project
Officials said that the 78.42 km long Dhansiri-Jubja railway line is a project of national importance. It aims to establish direct rail connectivity between Dimapur and Kohima and modernize the transport system in the entire region.
This railway route passes through Karbi Anglong district of Assam and Chumaukedima and Kohima districts of Nagaland. The completion of this project will pave the way for directly connecting the state capital with the rail network for the first time.
Current status of construction work
Officials informed in the meeting that work on some parts of the project has already been completed. Dhansiri–Shokhuvi and Shokhuvi–Molvom sections have already been commissioned.
Work on the remaining stretches is continuing apace, although difficult geographical conditions and weather challenges are hampering progress. Despite this, the construction agencies are making continuous efforts to complete the project on time.
Technical and natural challenges
Many challenges are being faced in the construction work of the project. These include problems like landslide prone areas, heavy monsoon rains, weak rock structure and limited working period.
Apart from this, technical problems like leakage of high pressure groundwater and geological fault zones have also come to light during tunnel construction. Due to these reasons, the pace of work has slowed down at many places.
Modernization of Dimapur Railway Station
The progress of integrated redevelopment of Dimapur Railway Station was also reviewed in the meeting. The project is likely to be completed by July 2028.
Under this plan, the station is being equipped with modern facilities, including passenger amenities, office buildings, residential quarters and better circulation areas.
Officials said that the construction and foundation work at various places is progressing rapidly, which will make this station a major modern railway hub in future.
Economic and social impact
The completion of this railway project is expected to bring a major change in the transportation system in Nagaland. The travel time between Dimapur and Kohima will be significantly reduced, which will directly benefit the common people, students and patients.
With this, transportation of goods will become easier, which will boost trade and industry. There is also a possibility of growth in the tourism sector as better connectivity can increase the number of tourists visiting the state.
Need for cooperation from state government
Railway officials have also demanded many important cooperation from the state government. These include construction of access roads to new stations, completing the land records process, and removing obstacles in construction work along the river banks.
Apart from this, the problem of encroachment in construction areas also remains a big challenge, for the solution of which coordination between Railways and State Administration is said to be necessary.
Governor’s emphasis on development
Governor Nand Kishore Yadav said in the meeting that these projects are not just infrastructure development, but are linked to the economic and social future of Nagaland.
He said that it is necessary to complete these projects in a time bound manner so that the public can get better connectivity and facilities. The Governor also assured all possible cooperation to the state government.
