Mark Zuckerberg also made a big mistake in AI race, this big secret of Meta revealed through leaked email

At present, there is a strange competition in the world of tech regarding Artificial Intelligence i.e. AI. Every company wants to go ahead. In this race, Facebook’s parent company Meta is also pouring billions of dollars like water. But is everything going according to plan? The answer is- no. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg himself has admitted that he has made big mistakes in his haste to mold the company’s workforce into the mold of AI.

This has been revealed by an internal memo (leaked email) of Meta obtained by Reuters. In this email, Zuckerberg has directly told his employees that the company has made many ‘mistakes’ during the AI transformation and the possibility of more such mistakes happening in the future also cannot be ruled out.

AI shift and Zuckerberg’s confession

Actually, the changes that are taking place in the tech world at the moment are very complex. “Given the complexity of these changes, we have made mistakes and are almost certain to make more,” Zuckerberg wrote in the memo. However, he also consoled the employees and said that his entire focus is now on bringing stability within the company.

This news may bring some relief to those lakhs of employees who have been living under the fear of retrenchment for some time. Zuckerberg has made it clear that he does not want to make any false promises because the world is changing very fast, which is beyond his control. But, he reiterated that no more large-scale layoffs are expected in the company this year.

Transfer of 7,000 employees and new strategy

Recall that in May this year, Meta had conducted a major restructuring process. Under this, the company had shown the way out to 10 percent of its workforce across the world. At the same time, instead of laying off about 7,000 employees, they were put to work on new projects related to AI workflow and training AI models.

The meta’s strategy was to reduce the size of teams by creating new and important roles. According to Zuckerberg, one advantage of this move was that if the strategy in any department proved wrong, then these employees could be transferred back to their old departments. That means the company is, in a way, working in ‘trial and error’ mode. When Reuters contacted Meta regarding this leaked memo, the company declined to comment.

Increased burden on managers and Zuckerberg’s new plan

During this entire AI shift, another big problem had arisen within the meta. The company had created a new unit named ‘Applied AI Engineering’. The structure of this unit was made so flat that 50-50 employees were working under one manager. Due to this ratio of 50:1, the burden of work and supervision on the managers had increased considerably, due to which there was a lot of resentment within the house.

Now Zuckerberg has admitted that there were shortcomings in this system and the company is now planning to reduce the burden, i.e. reducing the oversight role of managers. Along with this, Meta is now going to increase the budget for corporate events and offsite meetings to improve mutual coordination among employees. To speed up the development of AI models, a large scale ‘Hackathon’ is also being organized in July.

This entire exercise is being done because the stake is very high. In the month of April itself, Meta had increased its annual capital expenditure estimate to between $125 billion and $145 billion. It is clear that Zuckerberg is ready to go to any extent to win this battle of AI, even if for this he has to learn from his mistakes and change his path again and again.
