Top 5 totals by India in ODIs after IND vs AFG 2nd ODI
On Wednesday, in the IND vs AFG 2nd ODI in Lucknow, India scripted history by achieving a 400-plus total for the 8th time in ODI cricket.
Led by blazing centuries from Shubman Gill and Ishan Kishan, the hosts posted 402 runs against Afghanistan at the Ekana Cricket Stadium after Hashmatullah Shahidi, the Afghanistani skipper, had won the toss and elected to field first.
Gill reached his century in 77 balls, and Kishan attained his three-figure score six balls faster than his captain. The right-hander finished with 154 (110), the left-hander whacked 125 (79), and the duo shared a phenomenal third-wicket partnership of 224 (141).
The first time India had posted a total in excess of 400 in ODI cricket was back in 2007. Between that day and today, there had been six more scores of over 400 by the Men in Blue.
The last time India made more than 400 runs in an ODI match was during the 2023 World Cup against the Netherlands in Bengaluru.
India are now tied with South Africa for scoring 400-plus totals in ODI cricket the most number of times. England have 7 such totals, followed by Australia with three.
Scoring 400+ teams totals most times in ODIs:
- South Africa and India – 8 times
- England – 7 times
- Australia – 3 times
The 402 India made against Afghanistan is their ninth-highest team total. At one point today, India were looking set to break their highest ODI total, however, the hosts lost wickets after the Gill-Kishan partnership and failed to cross the historic number.
What Is India’s Highest Team Score In ODI Cricket?
India’s highest team total in ODIs is 418/5, which they made against the West Indies in 2013 in Indore. Opener Virender Sehwag was the chief architect of India’s highest team score as he blasted a double century, scoring 219 off 149 balls.
Top 5 totals by India in ODIs:
- 418/5 vs West Indies, Indore, 2013
- 414/7 vs Sri Lanka, Rajkot, 2009
- 413/5 vs Bermuda, Port Of Spain, 2007
- 410/4 vs Netherlands, Bengaluru, 2023
- 409/8 vs Bangladesh, Chattogram, 2022
All of India’s eight 400-plus team totals in ODI cricket have come while batting first. And India won all their previous 7 ODIs whenever they made more than 400 runs. It would be a great shock if they lost to Afghanistan after amassing 402.
