Over 1,000 form 2km queue for $860-a-month jobs in Malaysia

Applicants began arriving at a local hotel as early as 6 a.m. on Sunday for the interview session held by German semiconductor and electronics company Infineon, according to Sinchew.

The recruitment drive, scheduled for 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. that day, sought to fill between 300 and 500 positions, including operator and technician roles.

As the morning progressed, the queue stretched along the main road leading to the hotel, with photos and videos of the scene quickly circulating on social media.

Ab Rauf Yusoh, chief minister of Melaka, said in a Facebook post, cited by Mothershipthat the line had reached about 2km.

The company had reportedly expected only about 100 applicants to turn up.

Ngwe Hee Sem, Melaka’s executive councilor, said the overwhelming turnout does not reflect the state’s jobless rate, which is around 2%, among the lowest in Malaysia and well below the national average of 3%.

Many of those who attended the event were believed to have traveled from other states after being drawn by the job opportunities, Ngwe said, as quoted by the New Straits Times.

One of the applicants, 32-year-old Nurul Fatin Najwa, told China Press that she learned of the jobs on social media and decided to apply, citing the company’s reputation for attractive pay and employee benefits.

She arrived at the venue as early as 6:30 a.m., only to find that a large crowd had already gathered outside. It was not until about 10 a.m. that she entered the hotel for an interview that lasted around 15 minutes.

But not everyone made it that far as many in the queue gave up after several hours in the heat, according to SAYS.
