Panathinaikos Parts Ways With Ergin Ataman After Three Seasons
Panathinaikos has officially ended its partnership with head coach Ergin Ataman, bringing an end to a highly successful three-year spell in Athens. The decision was reportedly reached after discussions between Ataman and club owner Dimitris Giannakopoulos, despite the Turkish coach still having one year remaining on his contract.
Ataman leaves the Greek powerhouse after a remarkable stint that included four major trophies. His biggest achievement came in the 2023-24 season when he guided Panathinaikos to the EuroLeague championship in his first year with the club, while also helping the team secure domestic success in Greece.
However, the 2025-26 campaign proved far more challenging. Panathinaikos managed to win the Greek Cup but failed to reach the EuroLeague Final Four and fell short in the Greek League title race. Those disappointing results ultimately led the club to seek a new direction.
In a farewell message, Ataman expressed gratitude to the club, its ownership and supporters, saying he would always cherish the memories created during his time in Athens. He highlighted the EuroLeague triumph and the strong connection he built with the Panathinaikos fan base as the proudest moments of his tenure.
The departure has already sparked speculation about potential replacements. Several reports suggest that legendary Serbian coach Željko Obradović is among the leading candidates being considered by the Greek club as it prepares for the 2026-27 season.
While Ataman’s exit marks the end of a successful chapter for Panathinaikos, his legacy remains secure after helping restore the club’s status among Europe’s basketball elite and delivering its long-awaited return to EuroLeague glory.
