3000 ODI runs in three years…this record of Dhoni is impossible to break
In the ongoing 3-match ODI series against Afghanistan, Indian captain Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer have completed their respective 3000 runs in this format. Shubman had crossed the 3000-run mark during his unbeaten inning of 84 runs during the first ODI match played in Dharamshala. Shreyas achieved this feat in Lucknow. While Shubman took 62 innings, Shreyas took 72 innings. Shubman is the fastest Indian to reach this milestone in terms of innings. Whereas Shreyas is at joint second place with Shikhar Dhawan.
Shubhman and Shreyas may have taken less innings but it has taken them more than 7 years to reach here. Shubhman made his ODI debut in January 2019. It took him 7 years and 133 days to reach 3000 runs. Shreyas started his ODI career in December 2017. He completed his 3000 ODI runs in 8 years and 189 days. The Indian player who has reached this milestone in the shortest time is Mahendra Singh Dhoni.
After making his ODI debut in December 2004, Dhoni completed the journey of 3000 runs in 3 years and 51 days, which was a world record at that time. West Indies’ Shai Hope broke his record by scoring 3000 ODI runs in 3 years 36 days.

Why is it impossible to break Dhoni’s record?
Former captain Dhoni started his ODI career at a time when T20 cricket was not played that much. Now T20 is dominant, due to which ODI format is on the decline. No team wants to play this format if ICC ODI World Cup and Champions Trophy are not around the corner. The Indian team itself played only 3 ODIs in 2024. In such a situation, even if an Indian player cements his place in the team after making his debut and scores runs continuously, he will not be able to get enough matches so that he can break Dhoni’s record by completing 3000 ODI runs in a short time.
