BCCI’s big plan for IPL 2027: There will be change in the dates of the league, decision on the number of matches will also be taken
Saikia said the scorching heat and onset of pre-monsoon rains in many parts of the country in the second half of May would have caused problems for both players and spectators. For this reason, BCCI is seriously considering the option of starting and ending the tournament early.
There may be change in IPL dates
He told that IPL 2026 started on 28 March and the final was played on 31 May. But after May 15, weather conditions sometimes become a challenge. Therefore, the board wants that big matches like playoffs and finals should be completed before the adverse weather.
IPL can start from the beginning of March
Devjit Saikia said that he has received complaints from both players and spectators regarding the heat. Especially in North and West India, temperatures remain very high during May, which affects the performance of the players and the experience of the spectators.
Decision can be taken in view of summer
He said that not all players are used to playing in such hot weather. In such a situation, to provide a better environment, it is the priority of the board to end the IPL by May 15.
Extension of 94 matches is not possible at the moment
In recent years, there has been talk of increasing the IPL from 74 to 94 matches. But BCCI rejected this possibility for now. Saikia clearly said that considering the international cricket calendar, it is not easy to extend the tournament for more than 2 months.
He said that the availability of players from countries like Australia, England, New Zealand, South Africa and West Indies also had to be kept in mind. BCCI does not want to affect the schedule of bilateral series and ICC tournaments at any cost.
Preparation for change in domestic cricket also
BCCI is also considering changes in the domestic cricket calendar to start the IPL early. According to Saikia, the board wants all the domestic tournaments including Ranji Trophy to end by March 10, so that the IPL can be started immediately. The 20th edition of IPL will be played in 2027 and BCCI has started preparations to make it special.
