Student consumed poison in Tamil Nadu due to NEET re-exam, 4 students committed suicide in last two days, till now 12 students have committed suicide.
New Delhi: After the cancellation of NEET-UG 2026 examination across the country, the concern regarding the increasing mental pressure on students is continuously increasing. Two more student deaths were reported from Tamil Nadu and Gujarat on Wednesday. Following these incidents, the number of students who lost their lives following the cancellation of exams has reached almost 12.

Student consumed poison in Tamil Nadu
19-year-old Anukeerthana, who was preparing for NEET in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, committed suicide by consuming poison on Wednesday morning. Initial investigation revealed that he had sent WhatsApp messages to his uncle and some close relatives before his death. In the message, she wrote that she had given the NEET exam and was waiting for admission in a medical college, but the fear of giving the exam again after the exam was canceled was constantly troubling her. She also wrote that her father has spent a lot of money on her education and now she is unable to understand how to cope with them. Police have seized the student’s mobile and started investigation.
Student jumps from sixth floor in Ahmedabad
On the other hand, in New Ranip area of Ahmedabad at around 2:30 pm on Wednesday night, a 17-year-old student jumped from the sixth floor of Block-B of Anandam Flats. He was immediately taken to the hospital, where doctors declared him dead. According to the police, the student was preparing for NEET. At present the reason behind the suicide is not clear and the investigation of the case is going on.

Since the cancellation of exams, 12 students have committed suicide across the country.
Before these two incidents, cases of death of 23-year-old Riya Thapa in Dehradun and 17-year-old student in Lucknow had come to light on June 16. At the same time, since the cancellation of the examination on May 12, there have been reports of death of about 12 students from different states of the country, which has sparked a new debate regarding the examination system and the mental health of the students.
Why was the exam canceled
It is noteworthy that the NEET-UG 2026 examination was held across the country on May 3, in which about 23 lakh candidates took part. After the examination, there were allegations from many states that question papers were leaked and papers reached some candidates in advance. NTA canceled the exam on May 12 after the investigating agencies indicated irregularities in the initial investigation. After this, based on the review of the Central Government and the investigating agencies, it was decided to conduct the examination again. Meanwhile, these incidents which are continuously coming to light are raising serious concerns regarding the increasing mental pressure on the students.
