Delhi High Court Upholds Temporary Ban On Telegram: Temporary ban on Telegram will continue, Delhi High Court justified the decision of the Central Government

New Delhi. The temporary ban imposed by the Central Government on Telegram app will remain in place. Delhi High Court has justified the government’s decision by rejecting the petition filed by Telegram. Due to the re-exam of NEET UG 2026 to be held on June 21, the Central Government has banned Telegram till June 22. Whereas the message edit feature in Telegram will remain closed till June 30. The government’s argument is that a temporary ban has been imposed due to incidents of alleged dissemination of wrong information related to examination question paper and fake examination material through Telegram.

This order of the Central Government was challenged by Telegram in the Delhi High Court. After hearing the arguments of both the sides on Thursday, the single bench of Justice Tejas Karia had reserved its decision. Today Justice Karia, while giving the verdict, said that the Central Government has the right to ban any platform under Section 69A of the IT Act 2000. During the hearing, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, on behalf of the Central Government, told the Delhi High Court that instant messaging platform Telegram is becoming a new dark web. Groups of criminals are being formed here. Telegram is being used in cases like terrorism, cyber crime and drug smuggling.

It was also told that many evidences have been found indicating the misuse of Telegram in connection with the manipulation in the NEET exam. Senior advocate Dhruv Mehta presented arguments on behalf of Telegram. After hearing all these arguments, the court upheld the Centre’s order. It is noteworthy that the NEET UG 2026 exam was held on May 3. After this, allegations of the paper being out started. After investigation, the allegations were found to be true to some extent, after which an order to cancel this examination was issued on May 12.
