Tottenham Hotspur open talks with Newcastle for Sandro Tonali transfer

Tottenham Hotspur have intensified their pursuit of Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonaliopening direct club-to-club talks over a potential summer transfer. The north London club are now battling Manchester City for the signature of the Italy international, with negotiations heating up on both the transfer fee and personal terms.

Newcastle’s £100m Valuation and Contract Situation

Newcastle United are reportedly demanding around £100 million ($133m) to part ways with their star midfielder. Tonali’s contract runs until 2029, with the option of a further 12-month extension, giving the Magpies significant bargaining power.

Discussions between Tonali’s representatives and both Tottenham and Manchester City are ongoing. Spurs are hopeful that a competitive salary package, the backing of head coach Roberto DeZerbiand the lifestyle appeal of London will help them win the race.

This marks a significant step forward from earlier reports. As recently as mid-June, Tottenham had been in positive talks with Tonali’s camp but had not yet made formal contact with Newcastle.

Tonali’s Impressive Form Since Return from Suspension

The 26-year-old has been one of Newcastle’s standout performers since returning from a 10-month gambling-related suspension. In the 2024/25 season, Tonali made 53 appearances across all competitions, scoring 3 goals as Newcastle finished 12th in the Premier League and reached the Champions League last 16.

Overall, since his return in August 2024, he has racked up 110 appearancescontributing 10 goals and 10 assists. His midfield partnership with club captain Bruno Guimarães has been particularly praised.

Tonali joined Newcastle from AC Milan in July 2023 for approximately £60.5 million. Born in Lodi, just 19 miles south of Milan, he came through Brescia’s youth system before making a name for himself at Milan.

Newcastle Open to Sales After Gordon Departure

Newcastle have shown they are willing to do big business this summer after selling winger Anthony Gordon to Barcelona for £69.3 million. The club remains open to cashing in on Tonali if their valuation is met, especially as they look to balance the books.

Earlier in the year, Arsenal were reportedly offered the player in January, but Newcastle refused to entertain any mid-season move.

Tottenham’s Busy Summer Transfer Plans

Tonali is not the only target for Spurs. The club are also among several teams monitoring West Ham United’s Matthew Fernandes. Meanwhile, Manchester City’s interest in Tonali has not slowed their separate pursuit of Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson.
