Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei said on Saturday, June 20, 2026 that Iran’s approach would now be “promise for promise.” He made it clear that the success of any agreement will depend on how it is implemented. Baqi warned that if the US does not fulfill its responsibilities, Iran will also retaliate.
According to the information, on June 17, 2026, the Presidents of both the countries had signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) digitally. Baqai said that further talks will take place only when America starts fulfilling the conditions written in Articles 1, 4, 5, 10 and 11 of this MoU. He also reminded that Iran has not forgotten the past experiences when America broke its promises.
A large delegation from Iran has reached Switzerland to resolve this matter. This team includes Parliamentary Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi. The round of talks began on 21 June 2026 at the Bürgenstock resort in Switzerland, where US Vice President JD Vance also attended. The main objective of this conversation is to find out how America will fulfill its promises.
On the other hand, in protest against Israeli attacks in Lebanon, Iran has decided to close the Strait of Hormuz again, whereas the initial agreement had stated that it would be kept open. Iran says that unless the situation in Lebanon improves, progress in talks is difficult. Pakistan and Qatar have played the role of mediator in this entire agreement.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has expressed confidence that the results of this agreement will be revealed soon and it will prove beneficial for Iran. This deal includes important things like return of Iran’s frozen assets by America and relaxation of sanctions.
