7 women died, 67 workers injured, 9 on ventilator due to ammonia gas leak in Tamil Nadu’s seafood factory.

Thiruvallur. Ammonia gas leaked at a seafood export factory in Tamil Nadu’s Tiruvallur district on Sunday. Seven women employees died in this accident, while 67 others were injured. Nine of the injured are on ventilator. Gas leak occurred at ‘St Peters Paul Seafoods Exports’ unit.

On receiving information about the incident, a 30-member NDRF team from 4th battalion headquarters at Arakkonam was sent to the spot. Given the situation, the NDRF team reached the spot with gas detection equipment and specialized CBRN (Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear) disaster-response equipment.

Employees had trouble breathing

The ammonia leak is believed to have originated from a seafood processing unit and spread throughout the facility. Many employees complained of difficulty in breathing, while some were also reported to be bleeding from the mouth and nose.
The affected employees were taken to nearby private hospitals for treatment. Several employees are still under medical care, while nine seriously injured employees were shifted by ambulance to the Government Stanley Medical College Hospital in Chennai.

NDRF special response team deployed

Teams of Police, Fire and Rescue Service, Revenue Department and Health Department reached the spot and started rescue operations. On the request of the district administration, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) deployed a specialized Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (CBRN) response team from its 4th battalion in Arakkonam.

The 30-member team was sent with gas detection equipment, protective gear and special rescue equipment to detect the impact of the leak, secure the area and assist in rescue operations. Periyapalayam Police has registered the case and investigation is underway.
