Bihar man arrested after axe attack on neighbour over long-running land dispute

Police in Bihar’s Gopalganj district have arrested a man accused of carrying out a serious axe attack on his neighbour following a long-standing land dispute, officials said on Monday. The incident occurred under the jurisdiction of Madhopur Police Station, where authorities received information on June 21 regarding a violent assault on Vijayendranath Tiwari.

Police Launch Immediate Investigation

According to police, upon receiving information about the attack, the Sub-Divisional Police Officer (Sadar-02) and the Station House Officer of Madhopur Police Station immediately rushed to the scene to verify the incident and initiate legal action. Officers conducted a preliminary investigation and secured the area while collecting evidence related to the assault. The injured victim was initially taken to Sadar Hospital in Gopalganj for medical treatment. Due to the seriousness of his injuries, doctors later referred him to Patna for advanced medical care.

Police said doctors have informed investigators that the victim’s condition is currently stable.

Forensic Team Called to Scene

Given the severity of the attack, authorities deployed a Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) team to examine the crime scene and gather scientific evidence. Investigators recovered the axe allegedly used in the assault. Police also seized blood-stained clothes reportedly worn by the accused at the time of the attack.

Officials said the forensic examination is expected to strengthen the evidence collected during the investigation.

Land Dispute Emerges as Motive

Preliminary findings indicate that the attack stemmed from a long-running land dispute between the victim and the accused. Police identified the accused as Rajesh Sah, a neighbour of the victim. Investigators believe the dispute escalated, resulting in the violent assault. Authorities are continuing to examine the circumstances leading up to the incident and are recording statements from witnesses and other individuals connected to the case.

Accused Sent to Judicial Custody

Police confirmed that a formal case has been registered in connection with the attack. Rajesh Sah was arrested following the investigation and has been produced before a court. He has subsequently been sent to judicial custody. Officials said further investigation is underway, including forensic analysis and the collection of additional evidence.

The incident has once again highlighted the dangers of unresolved land disputes, which continue to be a recurring source of violent confrontations in several parts of the country.
