From Hormuz to Lebanon ‘deal successful’! Consensus reached on many decisions in the first round of US-Iran talks, will the war calm down?
US Iran Deal Switzerland 60 Day Roadmap: Important and positive results have emerged from the first round of ongoing high-level peace talks between Iran and the United States in Bergenstock, Switzerland. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi claimed on Monday that significant progress has been made in the talks and both sides have agreed to continue discussions at the technical level.
The talks were held under the 14-point Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed this month, the main objective of which is to reduce regional tensions and find a lasting political solution.
Key points of the first round of talks:
60 day comprehensive roadmap
The two countries aim to reach a final agreement within the next two months. For this, a high level committee will be formed, which will give political direction to the technical teams and monitor the negotiations.
direct communication across the Strait of Hormuz
A communication line will be established between Iran and the US in the Strait of Hormuz to protect international merchant ships. Its purpose is to avoid any misunderstanding or accident and this arrangement will currently be in force for the negotiation period of 60 days.
Expert interaction at technical level
Teams of technical experts will continue to discuss complex issues on which complete consensus has not yet been reached. This will include important topics like nuclear programme, sanctions framework and dispute resolution.
Lebanon ‘De-Conflict Mechanism’
In view of the increasing tension on the border, both sides have agreed to create a new security arrangement with Lebanon. The objective of this mechanism is to prevent military confrontation and maintain the ceasefire situation.
Oil trade and economic relief claims
The Iranian Foreign Minister claimed that economic benefits such as relief from sanctions related to oil and petrochemical exports and limited access to frozen assets abroad were discussed. However, these claims are not clearly mentioned in the official joint statement and confirmation from the US is still awaited.
According to Abbas Araghchi, this progress achieved through mediation has created a strong foundation for future negotiations. However, the US has not yet given any official response to these results. The next phase of talks are expected to continue this week in Bergenstock.
Tireless Pakistani and Qatari mediation has delivered major progress to end Lebanon War. Oil and petrochem exports are waived, blockade lifted, some frozen assets released, and major reconstruction & development plan launched for Iran.
