Agreement between Iran and America, movement of ships will continue in the Strait of Hormuz, US Treasury Secretary announced
Big news has come regarding the Strait of Hormuz, the most important route for the world’s oil trade. America’s Treasury Secretary said that Iran has now promised to keep the passage of ships open from here. This decision is expected to provide relief to the oil market and maritime security around the world.
On June 22, 2026, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessant announced that Iran has assured free and open transit in the Strait of Hormuz. This happened during the ongoing talks in Switzerland, the aim of which is to reduce tension between Iran and big countries of the world. Along with this, Iran has also agreed to allow inspectors from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to enter the country.
Islamabad Agreement and its rules
Earlier on 17 and 18 June 2026, an “Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding (MOU)” was signed between America and Iran. This document was digitally signed by US President Donald Trump, Vice President JD Vance and Iran’s parliamentary speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf. Under this agreement, it was said that the Strait of Hormuz would be opened immediately and the US Navy blockade would be removed. It was also decided that Iran would remove military obstacles like mines laid under the sea within 30 days and the passage of ships would remain free from here for 60 days.
Controversy and current situation regarding rules
After the agreement, on June 19, Iran’s Persian Gulf Strait Authority (PGSA) issued new rules. Ships will now have to obtain transit permits, use routes near Iran and carry insurance recognized by the PGSA. However, America had imposed sanctions on PGSA only on May 27, 2026.
On June 20, the situation became tense when Iran’s Khatam al-Anbia Central Headquarters announced the closure of the Strait of Hormuz. Iran attributed this to Israel’s military action in Lebanon. But the US military command (CENTCOM) refuted this claim and said that the route was open and 55 ships traveled there that day.
At present the situation as on June 22 is that the movement of ships is continuing. Some ships are going through the southern route under the supervision of the US military, while some are using the northern route with permits from Iranian authorities. A means of communication has also been created between the two countries so that any accident can be prevented, although the number of ships has not yet reached the same level as before the war.
