Among those who lost their lives in the fire was 23-year-old Sukhmani Singh, who was a game designer and worked in a graphics-animation centre. During the accident, he called his father and said only, “Papa, please save me…”

The son continued to suffer, the father could not do anything even after trying

Sukhmani’s father Prabhjot Singh told that his son’s call had come at around 2 pm. He was very scared and said that he could not find any way out. Hearing the fear and helplessness in his son’s voice, the father yearned for help, but fate separated them forever after one last conversation.

“Save it somehow”

27 year old Joynil Chakraborty also lost his life in this accident. His relative Vishwanath Sarkar told that Joynil had called his aunt and said, “Aunty, we are trapped… please save us somehow.”

Had the wall been broken earlier, many lives could have been saved.

The family members say that they reached the spot, but by then the situation had become very scary. He says that if the decision to break the wall had been taken earlier, perhaps some lives could have been saved. Vishwajeet told that even when the wall was being demolished, he was connected to Joynil on phone.

Identification of the dead

Many dead people have been identified so far in this tragic accident. These include the names of Joynil, Shahjaan, Mohammad Abdul, Sanyam, Sagar, Nilesh, Aditya, Anamika, Mohammad Ammar, Suraj Shah, Bhavishya, Sukhmani, Jyoti, Somalika and Ananya.

KGMU Vice Chancellor Sonia Nityananda said that 24 people were brought to the hospital, out of which 15 were declared dead. According to doctors, no injury marks were found on the bodies and initial investigation revealed death due to suffocation. This accident was not just a fire, but became a tragedy that took away the hopes, dreams and last voice of their loved ones from many families.
