Asian markets today, June 23: KOSPI down 3.95%, Nikkei falls 1.01%, Taiwan declines 0.30%
Asian stock markets traded mixed in early trading on June 23, with several major benchmarks remaining under pressure while a few markets managed to post modest gains. Investors continued to assess regional market trends and broader global cues as trading got underway across the region.
Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index declined 0.44% to 23,663.60, while Japan’s Nikkei fell 1.01% to 71,623.97. South Korea’s KOSPI emerged as the weakest performer among the major Asian indices, dropping 3.95% to 8,754.82. Taiwan’s benchmark index also traded lower, slipping 0.30% to 47,598.89, while Malaysia’s market declined 0.50% to 1,692.40.
Chinese equities were largely subdued during the session. The Shanghai Composite edged down 0.08% to 4,159.92, while the Shenzhen Index lost 1.18% to reach 16,178.85. The SGX-CNBC China Growth Index also moved lower, falling 1.33% to 1,593.94.
Despite the broader weakness, a few regional markets remained in positive territory. New Zealand’s NZX 50 gained 0.20% to 13,472.68, Australia’s ASX 200 added 0.05% to 8,820.90, and Singapore’s STI advanced 0.29% to 5,219.20 in early trade.
Overall, Asian markets presented a mixed picture at the start of the week, with declines across several major indices outweighing gains in Australia, New Zealand and Singapore. Market participants are expected to remain focused on economic developments and global market signals as the trading day progresses.
