Fire safety rules become strict after frequent fires in Delhi

After several major fire incidents in the capital Delhi in recent times, Delhi Fire Service (DFS) has increased the strictness regarding fire safety. In view of the frequent fire incidents, it has now been made mandatory for owners or users of many types of buildings and basements having two or more levels to obtain fire safety certificate. Earlier in Delhi, 9 people had died in a fire in a four-storey building in Vivek Vihar. After this, 23 people lost their lives in a fire incident in a hotel in Malviya Nagar. Apart from this, incidents of fire have also been reported in the furniture market of Shastri Park, ‘Punjabi Tadka’ restaurant of Kalkaji and the hospital of Dabri.

After these incidents, Delhi Fire Service issued a notice on June 16 releasing a list of 11 categories of buildings. In these buildings, it will be necessary to arrange fire prevention and safety measures as per National Building Construction Standard-2026 (Part-F), Delhi Fire Service Act, 2007 and Delhi Fire Service Rules, 2010. According to DFS, buildings which do not follow fire safety standards may face trouble in obtaining fire safety certificate. The objective of the department is to ensure security arrangements in advance to prevent major accidents.
