Resignation of Union Minister George Kurien, President Draupadi Murmu accepted with immediate effect
digital desk- Union Minister of State for Minority Affairs George Kurien has resigned from his post on Tuesday. President Draupadi Murmu, on the advice of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has accepted his resignation from the Union Council of Ministers with immediate effect, under clause (2) of Article 75 of the Constitution. Kerala BJP leader George Kurien’s Rajya Sabha tenure ended on June 21, after which he took this step. 65-year-old George Kurien was an important role in the third Union Cabinet led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Apart from the Minority Affairs portfolio, he also served as Minister of State in the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying. With the end of his tenure as Rajya Sabha MP from Madhya Pradesh, his journey in both these ministries officially came to a halt.
Tarun Chugh gets ticket, speculations confirmed
BJP had already indicated that the party is not sending George Kurien to Rajya Sabha again. In his place, BJP national general secretary Tarun Chugh was given Rajya Sabha ticket from Madhya Pradesh, after which speculations about Kurien’s resignation were rife. George Kurien was elected to the Rajya Sabha in August 2024 after becoming the Union Minister of State.
Poor performance in Kerala assembly elections became the reason
There is talk in political circles that due to the party’s disappointing performance in the Kerala Assembly elections, he was not nominated again to the Rajya Sabha. Kurien had contested elections from Kanjirappally in Kerala this year, but his performance was very disappointing. He could not even touch the vote tally secured by former Union Minister Alphonse Kannanthanam on this seat.
Know who is George Kurian
George Kurien is a stalwart leader of BJP and has been a loyal member of the party since its inception in 1980. Along with politics, he has also practiced as a lawyer in the Supreme Court. Born in Kottayam district of Kerala, Kurien has done post-graduation in law. Earlier, he was Vice Chairman of National Minorities Commission and former Union Minister of State for Railways O. Rajagopal has also worked as OSD.
