Big decision in Bhawanipur election case, Calcutta High Court orders to keep CCTV footage safe
Knews Desk- Calcutta High Court has issued important instructions in the Bhawanipur election dispute case involving West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. The court ordered to keep all the CCTV footage of the counting center safe and made it clear that the data will not be deleted or destroyed in any way.
This order came during the hearing of the petition in which Mamata Banerjee has made allegations of alleged rigging while challenging the election results. The petition claims that there were many irregularities during the vote counting process, which need to be investigated.
During the hearing, senior advocate Kalyan Banerjee presented arguments on behalf of the petitioner side. He said that till the first 12 rounds of counting the situation was normal and Mamata Banerjee was leading, but after that suddenly a big change was seen in the results. He alleged that during this period some agents of Trinamool Congress were allegedly assaulted and thrown out of the counting centre. Kalyan Banerjee also alleged that central forces allegedly helped agents of the opposition party and that unusual changes were seen in the counting process after the 13th round. He said that the record of the entire incident is present in CCTV cameras, which is very important to keep safe.
The petition also claimed that questions have been raised on the role of the Returning Officer. The advocate said that despite the objections, the officer concerned was retained in the post and later he was also given administrative responsibility. Apart from this, questions were also raised on the transfers of some officers associated with the then Election Commission. Mamta Banerjee also demanded in the court that all CCTV footage and EVMs related to vote counting should be kept safe so that the matter can be investigated impartially.
After hearing all the arguments, the court gave clear instructions that the CCTV footage of Bhawanipur counting center should be kept safe and should not be destroyed under any circumstances. The next hearing of the case has been fixed after about two months. This matter is now being considered politically important because it has raised new questions regarding the transparency and fairness of the election process.
