Britain considered ‘Maharishi’ of Ayurveda as a Guru, Maharishi Sushruta got respect in the British country.
London. Britain’s prestigious Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh has installed the statue of Maharishi Sushruta in its premises. At first glance you would feel that this is just a matter of pride for India. But friends, the real story is much bigger than this. For centuries, the history of surgery has been taught in the world, starting from Greece, Rome and Europe.
But now one of the oldest surgical institutions in the world is admitting that the history of surgery was not made only in Europe. A large chapter of it was written in India. That is, this is not just the unveiling of the statue but the return of a forgotten chapter of medical history.
When was the college established
Where this statue is installed. The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh was established in the year 1505. Today it has more than 33 thousand members in more than 140 countries. It is counted among the most prestigious surgical institutions in the world. That means this is not an ordinary college, but a big institution in the global surgery world. And now this same institute has honored Maharishi of Ayurveda, Sushruta.
About 2600 years ago, when medical science was in its infancy in many parts of the world, Maharishi Sushruta in India described in detail more than 300 types of surgeries and 124 surgical instruments. He taught the whole world how plastic surgery is done. His knowledge is recorded in ‘Sushruta Samhita’, which is considered to be one of the world’s most ancient and systematic texts on surgery.
You should also know one fact here. Today the doctors of the world talk about the Hippocratic Oath i.e. medical oath. But according to new research and published book, Maharishi Sushruta had established the principles of medical ethics and surgical discipline centuries before Hippocrates. That is, medical ethics was being discussed in India when organized medical system was not even developed in many parts of the world.
