India’s former World Cup winning captain Rohit Sharma received Padma Shri Award, honored by President Murmu

New Delhi: Former India captain Rohit Sharma received the country’s fourth highest civilian honor Padma Shri at Rashtrapati Bhavan on Tuesday. President Draupadi Murmu presented him this honor for his contribution to cricket.

Rohit’s name was included in the list when the Padma Awards were announced in January. During the ceremony, when he reached the stage to receive the honour, the people present in the hall welcomed him with applause. After receiving the honour, pride and happiness could be clearly seen on Rohit’s face.

Rohit’s journey in cricket was memorable   

Rohit Sharma is counted among the most successful batsmen and captains of Indian cricket. Under his captaincy, India won the T20 World Cup 2024 and Champions Trophy 2025 titles. He was also a part of the 2013 Champions Trophy winning team.

In the 2023 ODI World Cup, both Rohit’s captaincy and batting won the hearts of the fans. He scored 597 runs in the tournament and took India to the final. In the 2019 World Cup, he scored 648 runs by scoring a record five centuries and became the highest run scorer. His aggressive batting and calm captaincy have made him a role model for millions of youngsters.

Vijay Amritraj and Savita Punia also got the honor   

Indian tennis legend Vijay Amritraj was awarded the Padma Bhushan at the same ceremony. In view of his contribution to sports, he was given the country’s third highest civilian honour.

Savita Punia, known as the wall of women’s hockey, was also awarded Padma Shri. She was the captain of the Indian women’s hockey team that achieved fourth place in the Tokyo Olympics 2021. The team had created history by defeating a strong team like Australia in the quarter-finals.

After receiving the honour, Savita said that this moment is very special for her. He told that there was a time when even leaving the house seemed difficult, but today standing with his family in Rashtrapati Bhavan is the biggest victory of his journey.
