Insectarium first look unveiled as haunting stop motion film imagines a world without insects

A new stop motion film is already catching attention online.

The project is called Insectarium and comes from acclaimed Mexican filmmaker Sofia Carrillo. The film recently revealed its first look, showing off the handcrafted visual style that has become Carrillo’s trademark.

The story takes place in a future where insects have completely disappeared from Earth. That changes when a young girl named Lexi revives a moth that was believed to be dead, setting off a chain of events that could transform her world forever.

Insectarium brings a unique stop-motion world to life

Unlike many animated films aimed at children, Insectarium appears to blend fantasy, mystery and environmental themes.

According to early details, Lexi works with her uncle, Dr. Krause, an entomologist who preserves insect specimens in a collection. After accidentally removing a pin from a rare Attacus atlas moth, she takes it home to hide her mistake. To her surprise, the moth comes back to life.

The premise may sound simple, but it raises a much larger question. What would happen if a world that had lost all insects suddenly got one back? That idea sits at the heart of the film’s story and has already intrigued animation fans following the project’s development.

Sofia Carrillo’s Insectarium marks a major milestone

The film is especially significant because it marks Sofia Carrillo’s first feature length movie. Carrillo is already well known in animation circles for her award winning short films, including Ceruleanwhich earned praise at festivals around the world.

Reports suggest the Insectarium will continue some of the visual style and atmosphere that made Cerulean so memorable, while telling a completely standalone story. The project is being produced through an international collaboration involving companies from Mexico and Spain.

The newly released images highlight detailed puppets, eerie environments and a dreamlike aesthetic that feels very different from mainstream animated movies.

Insectarium release and what comes next

While the film is still making its way through production, Insectarium has already been showcased at industry events and is drawing interest from animation fans eager to see more. Current plans point toward a future release after the production process is completed.

For now, the biggest mystery is not how Lexi brought the moth back to life. It is what happens when a single insect returns to a planet that has forgotten how to live alongside them, and that question could turn Insectarium into one of the most unusual animated films on the horizon.
