New Delhi, 23 June 2026. UPI payment through smartphones has made financial transactions in the country extremely simple, but a small mistake can lead to a big problem. Sometimes, it is common to click on the wrong number, accidentally enter an extra zero in the amount, or send money to an unknown person’s account. Many people realize this mistake when they check their transaction history the next morning, which causes them sleepless nights.

According to National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), UPI transactions have broken all records in May 2026. A total of 23.2 billion transactions took place in this month, whose total value was more than ₹29.90 lakh crore. Amidst this heavy usage, incidents of money being transferred to wrong accounts have also increased rapidly.

Recovery of money transferred by mistake

If more money has been transferred from your bank account to someone, then first contact the person who has received the money. Tell them your mistake and politely request that they refund the extra amount. If they are reluctant to return, immediately contact the customer support of your bank and UPI app.

To strengthen this process, you need to have strong evidence, such as UPI transaction ID, screenshot of money deducted, and a record of the date and time of the transaction. These documents form the basis of your complaint.

Once a UPI transaction is successful, there is no automatic option to reverse or cancel it. Your bank plays the role of mediator in resolving this dispute. If the receiver refuses to return the money, there is no need to worry, because as per banking rules, no one has the right to keep the amount received by mistake.
