The sequel to Will Smith’s blockbuster sci-fi movie from the ’90s is all set to arrive on Hulu. Independence Day: Resurgence came out in 2016, but didn’t have Smith in the lead role. Roland Emmerich directed it, and the film didn’t do as well at the box office as its predecessor.
Independence Day: Resurgence to stream on Hulu next month
The Roland Emmerich-directed sci-fi film is all set to arrive on the streaming platform on July 1, 2026.
The movie is the sequel to Will Smith’s Independence Day, which came out in 1996 and was also helmed by Emmerich. However, the Hancock star did not return for the second movie, which led to skepticism from fans at the time of its release. Instead, Resurgence featured a talented cast including Liam Hemsworth, Jeff Goldblum, Bill Pullman, Maika Monroe, Vivica A Fox, Joey King, and many more.
Independence Day: Resurgence was made on a $165 million budget. Despite being made on a budget higher than the first movie, the second part underperformed. It opened with $41 million and went on to make around $103 million at the domestic box office. At the international box office, the movie collected $286 million, taking its worldwide collections to $389 million (via Box Office Mojo).
In comparison, Will Smith’s Independence Day was made on a $75 million budget. It opened with $50 million at the box office but soon gained momentum, ultimately collecting around $306 million. At the international box office, they made around $511 million. Thus, the movie’s total box office stood at $817 million.
While speaking to Yahoo! Movies in 2016, Smith talked about Independence Day: Resurgence and said, “I was working on Suicide Squad during that time. Roland and I had talked about it. The trailer looks really cool. I’m going to be sitting around with tears in my eyes when that one comes out… It was terrible when I found out my character died.”
