In our country, for centuries, artisans working with hands and tools, such as blacksmiths, goldsmiths, potters, masons, cobblers and tailors, have been the backbone of our economy and culture.
To connect these traditional artisans with modern technology, improve their skills and make them economically strong, a very strong scheme of the Central Government works, whose name is – Pradhan Mantri Vishwakarma Yojana (PM Vishwakarma Yojana). This scheme not only provides free training to the artisans, but also provides them loans at very cheap interest rates without any guarantee to expand their business. Let us understand in easy and straightforward paragraphs what this scheme is and how to take advantage of it.
PM Vishwakarma Yojana: What is the scheme and what are the benefits available in it?
PM Vishwakarma Yojana has been launched mainly to promote artisans and craftsmen associated with 18 traditional trades of the country. Under this scheme the government provides a number of strong financial and technical assistance to the beneficiaries:
- Skill Training and Stipend: Under the scheme, artisans are given basic training of 5 to 7 days and advanced training of 15 days or more to further improve their work. The most serious thing is that during the training, the artisans also get a stipend (allowance) of ₹ 500 every day, so that there is no loss in their wages.
- ₹15,000 for toolkit: After completion of the training, a voucher of ₹ 15,000 or e-shram voucher is given absolutely free by the government to buy new and modern tools.
- Collateral Free Loan: To start or expand your own business, the government provides loans up to ₹ 3 lakh without any guarantee at a very concessional interest rate of only 5%. This loan is available in two installments – ₹1 lakh in the first installment and ₹2 lakh in the second installment if it is repaid on time.
Who can avail the benefits of this scheme (Eligibility)?
The Government of India has listed 18 traditional businesses to avail the benefits of this scheme. If you or any member of your family is involved in the following work, he/she can apply:
- Carpenters, boat builders, weapon makers, blacksmiths, hammer and toolkit makers, locksmiths.
- Goldsmith, Potter, Sculptor, Stone carver, Cobbler/Shoe artisan.
- Masons, basket/mat/broom makers, coir weavers, doll and toy makers (traditional).
- Barber, Garland maker, Washerman, Tailor and fishing net maker.
Important rules: The age of the applicant must be at least 18 years. Only one member of the family can get the benefit of this scheme. Also, the applicant should not be in a government job and should not have availed any other government loan scheme for self-employment (like PMEGP or PM SVANidhi) in the last 5 years.
PM Vishwakarma Yojana: Required documents and direct way to apply
To avail the benefits of this Kadak scheme, you must have some very basic and important documents, which include Aadhaar card, mobile number (which is linked to Aadhaar), bank account passbook and ration card.

PM Vishwakarma Yojana: Registration process
- To apply you have to visit your nearest Common Service Center (CSC). You can also apply yourself by visiting its official website pmvishwakarma.gov.in.
- First of all, get your mobile number and Aadhar card verified.
- After this, fill your complete information and details of your work correctly in the ‘Artisan Registration Form’.
- After the form is submitted, your work will be verified by the officials.
- Once the verification is complete, you will get a PM Vishwakarma Digital ID and certificate, after which you will be fully eligible for training and loan.
