Trump’s direct warning to Iran, talks will end if toll is collected in Strait of Hormuz

US President Donald Trump has given a strict warning to Iran. He has clearly said that if toll, insurance or any kind of charge is collected from ships in the Strait of Hormuz, then all ongoing diplomatic talks with Iran will be stopped immediately. This matter is related to maritime security and oil supply, which is very important for the whole world.

Trump wrote on his Truth Social account on June 24, 2026 that Iran has assured the US that it will not charge any toll or other fees from ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz. Earlier on June 20, he had also said that no toll would be taken during the 60-day ceasefire, but if a peace agreement is not reached then America itself can impose toll.

What does Iran say?

On the other hand, there is a slight difference in Iran’s views. Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei said on May 25, 2026 that Iran will not charge transit tariffs, but fees will be charged for environmental protection and other technical services. On June 18, 2026, Iran also announced that it would introduce a new system of maritime duties within two months. Iran’s chief negotiator Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf made it clear that the management of the waterway will no longer be the same and there will be some expenses involved.

International law and the role of Oman

Amidst this entire controversy, talks between America and Iran are going on in Switzerland. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on June 24 that according to international law the Strait of Hormuz is an international waterway and no country can collect toll here.

Meanwhile, Oman has taken a big step in collaboration with the International Maritime Organization (IMO). Oman has announced that it will keep the Strait of Hormuz open without any toll and ensure safe passage.

  • Existing Agreement: Under a temporary agreement between the US and Iran, commercial ships are allowed to travel without any fees for 60 days.
  • future plan: In the coming time, talks will continue regarding the expenses of maritime services.
  • Importance: The Strait of Hormuz is the most important route for oil supplies around the world, so any tension here can affect global trade.
