Rekha government alert before monsoon in Delhi, plan prepared to prevent waterlogging and flood like situation
Every year during monsoon, situations like waterlogging and floods become a big challenge in Delhi. People have to face problems due to water logging on roads and traffic is also affected in many areas. To deal with this problem, Delhi government has started preparations this time even before the monsoon. The government of Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has prepared a detailed plan to prevent waterlogging in the capital and improve the rain water drainage system. Under this, emphasis is being laid on cleaning drains, monitoring the drainage system and making advance arrangements in sensitive areas.
Rekha Government has issued Flood Control Order 2026. Under this, instructions have been given to strengthen the drainage system of the capital and to make advance preparations in sensitive areas. In the order, those areas of Delhi have been identified where the problem of waterlogging occurs every year during monsoon. Special arrangements will be made in these areas to improve the drainage system, increase monitoring of drains and deal with emergency situations. Taking a lesson from the water level of Yamuna reaching record level in the year 2023 and the situation like floods in Delhi, this time the monitoring of pumping stations, major drains and barrages has been strengthened. A multi-agency plan has been implemented to deal with the waterlogging and flood situation, in which different responsibilities have been assigned to the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), Public Works Department (PWD) Delhi, Delhi Development Authority (DDA) and Delhi Jal Board (DJB).
Central flood control room will be active 24×7
To deal with situations like floods and waterlogging in Delhi during monsoon, Delhi government has further strengthened the monitoring system. The government has decided to keep the Central Flood Control Room active 24×7 till October 15, 2026. This control room will work to maintain better coordination between all the concerned departments and ensure immediate action in case of emergency. In case of waterlogging in any area, rise in the water level of rivers or any other disaster, the departments will be immediately alerted.
Apex Committee headed by the Chief Minister
A high-level apex committee has been formed under the chairmanship of Chief Minister Rekha Gupta to monitor flood control. It will include ministers of the concerned departments, Chief Secretary, police officers, representatives of the Army if needed, senior officials of many agencies including Delhi Development Authority (DDA), Delhi Municipal Corporation (MCD), Delhi Jal Board (DJB).
Three level warning system on Yamuna and Najafgarh drain
The government has prepared a three-stage warning system to deal with the situation of rising water level in Yamuna River and Najafgarh Drain. Under this, alerts will be issued in advance based on the rise in water level, so that the administration can take timely rescue and relief measures.
Yamuna River (based on water release from Hathnikund Barrage)
The first warning will be issued when 1 lakh cusecs of water is released.
3 lakh cusecs will be the second warning level.
5 lakh cusecs The third and most serious warning will be issued.
Najafgarh Drain (at the base of Masani Barrage)
35,000 cusec water flow first alert.
70,000 cusecs second alert.
1 lakh cusecs highest alert level.
Identification of more than 20 sensitive places in Delhi
In view of the possibility of floods and waterlogging during monsoon, the Delhi government has identified more than 20 sensitive places in the capital. These include important places like embankment, regulator and pumping station of Yamuna. Surveillance and rescue systems will already be strengthened in these sensitive areas. Engineering teams and disaster management personnel will be deployed to deal with any emergency, so that rising water levels, problems in the drainage system or other technical glitches can be resolved in time.
Relief and rescue preparations in 13 districts of Delhi
To deal with floods and waterlogging during monsoon, Delhi government has started relief and rescue preparations in all 13 districts of the capital. Under this, sector-wise committees have been formed in every district, which will monitor the situation at the local level and take immediate action if necessary. The administration has planned to provide control rooms, relief camps, boats, pump sets, medical facilities and food items in advance in each district. In case of any major disaster, army’s help can also be taken if needed. The government has also released helpline numbers for citizens to deal with waterlogging and emergencies, where people can seek help. Water logging helpline: 1800-11-0093, Police: 100/112, Fire service: 101, Ambulance: 102, Disaster management: 1077 Delhi government has appealed to the people to maintain distance from low-lying areas and water-logged places during heavy rains.
