Montella refuses to resign after Turkiye exit

Los Angeles: Turkey head coach Vincenzo Montella has firmly ruled out stepping down despite his team’s early exit from the FIFA World Cup 2026while also criticising sections of fans for what he described as excessive and unacceptable behaviour.

Turkiye were eliminated from the tournament following two consecutive defeats — a 2-0 loss to Australia and a narrow 1-0 defeat against Paraguay — leaving them without a point or goal. Despite dominating large parts of both matches statistically, the team failed to convert chances, leading to widespread disappointment among supporters.

Montella rejects resignation calls

Addressing the media during a passionate press conference, Montella made it clear that resignation was not an option.

“Will I resign? The answer is no,” he said. “Because I still have energy. I still have enthusiasm. I also feel stronger after this experience.”

The Italian tactician, who took charge of Turkiye in September 2023, stated that he remains committed to the team and its long-term development. He emphasised that external pressure would not influence his decision, adding that those demanding his exit would have to accept his stance.

Criticism of fan behaviour

Montella expressed concern over the nature of criticism directed at the team, both online and in person. He revealed that players and staff were subjected to verbal abuse from a small group of fans upon arriving at their hotel in Los Angeles.

“I was not expecting congratulations all the time, but I was not expecting this kind of communication,” Montella said, referring to the heckling incident.

He urged supporters and the media to show respect towards the players, particularly the younger members of the squad. According to Montella, personal attacks on players are damaging not only to individuals but also to the future of Turkish football.

“These are our players. I have seen personal attacks that I cannot accept. This is something you are doing against your own people,” he said.

Players reflect on missed opportunities

Turkiye winger Kenan Yildiz admitted that the squad is frustrated by the outcome, especially given their performances on the pitch. He pointed out that the team created numerous chances and performed well statistically but lacked the finishing needed to secure results.

“The expectations were really high for us,” Yildiz said. “We had the most shots and won many duels, but in football, statistics don’t win matches.”

The inability to convert dominance into goals ultimately proved costly, ending Turkiye’s hopes of progressing beyond the group stage.

A promising journey despite setback

Montella’s tenure has otherwise been marked by progress. He guided Turkiye to the quarter-finals of the UEFA European Championship 2024 and helped them qualify for the World Cup for the first time since 2002.

The coach believes the current squad has the potential to grow and succeed in future tournaments. He reiterated that the experience gained in this World Cup would be valuable for the team’s development.

Final match and focus ahead

Turkiye will conclude their World Cup campaign with a match against unbeaten co-host United States at the SoFi Stadium. Although the game holds no impact on qualification, Montella sees it as an opportunity to end the tournament on a positive note.

“I am very motivated,” he said. “I have the support of the federation president and the players. This is enough for me.”

He added that professionalism and commitment remain at the core of his approach, promising that the team will give its best despite elimination.

Conclusion

Turkiye’s World Cup journey may have ended prematurely, but Montella remains determined to continue leading the team forward. While criticism has intensified following the disappointing results, the coach has called for unity and support as the team looks to rebuild and improve for future competitions.
