Ration Card New Rule: Government changed the rule of free grains, know who will be affected

Ration Card New Rule: If your family has a ration card and you take advantage of Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY), then this news is important for you. The Central Government has prepared a proposal to change the rules of ration distribution. Although this decision has not been implemented yet, but after getting approval, it may affect lakhs of families.

The government has released a draft of amendments to the National Food Security Act (NFSA). According to the new proposal, there is a plan to organize ration distribution on the basis of each member instead of the family. Its objective is to ensure a more balanced distribution of grains to the needy people.

What can change?

According to the proposal, under Antyodaya Anna Yojana, it has been said that 7 kg of food grains will be fixed every month for each member of the family. However, no family will get more than 35 kg of ration in total. That means the maximum limit has been kept the same as before.

Why does the government want to make this change?

In the current system, a family of two members and six members get the same 35 kg ration. Due to this, small families get more grains per person and larger families get relatively less grains. The government believes that the new system can help in reducing this inequality.

Which families may be affected?

If this proposal is implemented, the amount of ration received by families of one to four members may be less than before. Whereas a family of five members will continue to get 35 kg ration as before. At present, a maximum limit of 35 kg has been proposed for families with six or more members.

Preparation of 3 crore new ration cards

The government says that after removing the names of ineligible beneficiaries, the process of issuing ration cards to about 3 crore new eligible people will now be taken forward. With this, eligible families who have been waiting for a long time are expected to get the benefits of the scheme.

Has the new rule come into effect? (Ration Card New Rule)

No. This is only a proposed draft. The government has sought suggestions from states, experts and common citizens by July 13, 2026. The final decision on this will be taken only after reviewing the suggestions and getting approval from the Parliament. Till then ration distribution will continue as per the old rules.
