The Reserve Bank of India said the revised guidelines will come into effect from January 1, 2027. These new rules also cover cases where someone has fraudulently stolen your password or OTP and initiated a transaction. Investigation must be completed within 45 to 60 days

As per the new framework, banks are required to investigate complaints related to domestic fraudulent electronic banking transactions within 45 calendar days and international complaints within 60 calendar days. If these deadlines are exceeded, banks must explain the reason to the customer.

In case of fraudulent credit card transactions, banks are required to issue a ‘shadow reversal’ (temporary refund) of the disputed amount within five calendar days of receiving information from the customer.
