Balochistan: 19 days of protests after acid attack on doctor, demand for security law and removal of officers

There is a strike going on in government hospitals of Balochistan for the last 19 days. This protest started after the acid attack on Dr. Mah Noor Nasir. Members of the Young Doctors Association (YDA) are now demanding justice and increased security in hospitals.

Main demands of doctors

YDA has placed its conditions before the government and said that they will not back down until their demands are met. Their main demands are as follows:

  • Doctors Security Act Should be implemented immediately.
  • There should be a judicial inquiry into the acid attack case.
  • The Health Secretary of Balochistan and the Medical Superintendent of Civil Hospital Quetta should be removed immediately.
  • Strict security arrangements should be made for hospitals and doctors.

OPDs of government hospitals have been kept closed due to the protest, although emergency, trauma and maternity services have been kept operational for the convenience of patients. Doctors have also set up their protest camp outside Civil Hospital Quetta.

Government’s action and treatment

After this incident, Chief Minister Mir Sarfaraz Bugti met Dr. Mah Noor Nasir and talked about his speedy recovery. Governor Jafar Khan Mandokhail spoke to the doctor’s father and assured that the government will bear the entire expense of his treatment. Currently, Dr. Mah Noor is in Aga Khan University Hospital, Karachi, but preparations have been completed to send him to America for better treatment and plastic surgery.

Pakistan’s Human Rights Council (HRC) has described this attack as barbaric. He has demanded from the government that action should be taken against the culprits under anti-terrorism laws.

This demonstration may become bigger in the coming days. YDA has decided to convene a Grand Doctors Conference on June 29. After this, a big rally will be taken out from the Civil Hospital on June 30 and demonstrations will be held in government hospitals across Balochistan.
