Who is Dinesh Trivedi?

Dinesh Trivedi is a well-known name in Indian politics. He was born on 4 June 1950 in New Delhi. His family is originally Gujarati. His parents came to India from Karachi at the time of partition and later his family started living in Kolkata. Dinesh Trivedi did his studies from St. Xavier’s College, Kolkata and then did MBA from the University of Texas, America.

After completing his studies, Dinesh Trivedi worked in America for some time. After this he returned to India and started working in the private sector. Later he started his own air freight business. Before joining politics, he was also active on social issues and raised his voice on issues like corruption and criminalization of politics.

Dinesh Trivedi started his political career with the Indian National Congress. After this he also joined Janata Dal. The most important turning point in his political career came in 1998, when he joined the Trinamool Congress formed by Mamata Banerjee. Dinesh Trivedi associated with Mamata Banerjee and became one of the founding members of the party. He was also the first General Secretary of Trinamool Congress and worked in the party for a long time. He also reached Parliament several times. In 2009, he was elected MP from Barrackpore Lok Sabha seat of West Bengal on Trinamool Congress ticket. After this he was made the Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare in the Manmohan Singh government.

In the year 2011, Dinesh Trivedi was made Railway Minister. He became the party leader who took over the Railway Ministry after Mamata Banerjee and was given this important responsibility after Mamata became the CM. In 2012, he presented the Railway Budget and in that budget there was a proposal to increase passenger fares. The issue led to a controversy within the Trinamool Congress and Trivedi later resigned from the post of Railway Minister.

He lost from Barrackpur seat in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. After this he again reached Rajya Sabha and in February 2021 he resigned from Rajya Sabha and Trinamool Congress. In March 2021, he joined the Bharatiya Janata Party. In April 2026, the Central Government appointed Dinesh Trivedi as the High Commissioner of India to Bangladesh. This appointment was also in discussion because usually career diplomats i.e. Indian Foreign Service officers are appointed to such posts. Dinesh Trivedi’s appointment was seen as a political appointment.
