Singapore’s cafe and bar Lou Shang will cease operations on July 14, marking the end of its nearly three-year run, further demonstrating pressures faced by Singapore’s food and beverage sector.

“The business was hard to maintain,” said founder Sebastian Ang, who also owns other food and beverage concepts, Mama Diam and Synthesis, in a video on social media, as quoted by The Straits Times.

Located above speakeasy restaurant and bar Mama Diam, Lou Shang was conceived as a tribute to everyday Singaporean life, taking design cues from older HDB (Housing & Development Board) estates and traditional neighborhood spaces.

The cafe’s interior incorporated familiar local elements, including blue-tiled tables, retro metal gates commonly seen at apartment entrances, and nostalgic signboards inspired by traditional provision shops, creating a setting that evoked the charm and familiarity of Singapore’s heartland communities.

Lou Shang will continue operating daily from 11:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. until its final day.

Singapore saw 1,267 food business closures between January and April this year, nearly half the total number of shutdowns seen throughout last year.
