Karachi, June 27. Panic spread due to indiscriminate firing after a massive blast at the Rangers Headquarters near Meteorological Chowrangi on University Road in Gulistan-e-Johar area in Pakistan’s port city Karachi late Saturday evening.
Security forces killed 6 attackers, one was caught
Sindh Inspector General Javed Alam Odho said a group of heavily armed attackers attacked the security compound, killing at least four paramilitary soldiers. The gunfight that lasted for about 90 minutes ended when Special Security Unit (SSU) commandos and Anti-Terrorist Force (ATF) troops, along with Rangers troops, killed six terrorists and captured an injured attacker.

Al Jazeera’s sources said that a group of armed men attacked the compound of the paramilitary Rangers Force in the Eastern District of Karachi. Just before this, a suspected bomber rammed a vehicle laden with explosives into the gate of the building, causing a massive explosion.
Explosive laden vehicle hits facility’s main gate
Javed Alam Odho told local media that according to initial information, the attackers had rammed the vehicle into the main gate of the facility. He said officials have not yet confirmed whether an explosion took place or not.
Meanwhile, Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah said in a statement that he has taken cognizance of the reports of the explosion and alleged firing and has ordered the authorities to submit a detailed report.
At present, as soon as the firing started, the security forces sealed the roads around Mosamiyat Chowringhee area. Clearance operation was being conducted by deploying Special Security Unit commandos, Anti-Terrorist Force and Rangers personnel on the spot. Edhi Foundation, an organization that provides emergency assistance across Pakistan, said that at least two people were injured and were taken to hospital.

Meanwhile, late in the night, Jamaat-ul-Ahrar, which is a breakaway armed group of Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) or Pakistani Taliban, claimed responsibility for the attack. According to the group’s claim, nine attackers were involved in the attack on the compound.
The Pakistani Taliban is a separate group from the Afghan Taliban, which captured power there in 2021. The attack comes at a time when Pakistan is facing armed violence targeting security forces in several parts of the country.
