Iran furious over Oman’s new sea route in the Strait of Hormuz, IRGC warns – ‘Danger if you go beyond our limits’
Iran: Even though the movement of ships through the Strait of Hormuz has resumed after the recent peace agreement between America and Iran, the tension on this strategic waterway has not completely ended. Iran had already indicated that the pre-war situation would not be restored. Now Tehran has reacted strongly to Oman activating a new route for sea vessels.
Iran’s strong objection to Oman’s new route
Oman, with US cooperation, has created a new sea route for the safe movement of oil tankers and other ships through its coastal area. After this move, Iran on Thursday (June 25) warned a ship coming from the direction of Hormuz, saying that it was in the range of its missiles. After this incident, there is a possibility of tension increasing again in the area.
IRGC issued official warning
Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guard Corps (IRGC) Navy, in a statement issued on its official website Sepah News, clearly stated that ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz should use only those sea routes determined by the Iranian authorities.
The statement also said that movement of ships is not allowed on any route other than the fixed route and doing so could be risky.
Oman issues guidelines under agreement with IMO
This warning comes at a time when Oman’s Maritime Security Center has issued new guidelines for ships going out of the Strait of Hormuz under the agreement with the International Maritime Organization (IMO).
Earlier, under the ceasefire agreement between America and Iran on June 18, Iran had promised to ensure safe movement of commercial ships without any duty for 60 days.
Consensus reached on forming joint working group
On Tuesday, Iran and Oman issued a joint statement saying that the two countries will form a Joint Working Group to manage future maritime traffic in the Strait of Hormuz.
Both countries also reiterated their commitment to ensure safe and unhindered movement of ships in accordance with international maritime laws.
